EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Independent School District will close its College Career and Technology Academy campus at the end of the school year, but district leaders say the program for at-risk students will continue in a new format.

During EPISD’s Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, members unanimously voted 7-0 to redesign the program, meaning while the program itself will not be closed, it will be shifting it from a centralized location, which is currently located at 2851 Grant Ave in Central El Paso to four host high school campuses: Burges, Chapin, Franklin, and El Paso High School.

CCTA is a program designed for under-credited students, allowing them to graduate with college and career-level skills.

The district said the change will allow students to be closer to home, have flexible schedules, and gain access to services such as a graduation coach, social worker, Emergence Health Network, and other services not currently provided at CCTA.

“Having a centralized program sometimes makes it more difficult rather than easier for our students to have access to the best possible options,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Lusk said.

Here is a list of the host schools and who they will serve:

– Serve Burges and Jefferson high school students

-Serve Chapin, Andress and Irvin high school students

-Serve Franklin and Coronado high school students

-Serve El Paso, Austin and Bowie high school students

While EPISD said the CCTA campus will close by the end of July, the Head Start program located at the campus will remain there.

During Tuesday’s meeting, a presentation was given by Mark Paz, EPISD’s assistant superintendent of secondary schools, where the district provided a timeline for the closure, which includes transition planning that will start next week and will continue through May.

Meanwhile, the closure of the campus comes as enrollment numbers obtained by KFOX14/CBS4 show that CCTA has 98 students in a campus with a capacity of more than 500.
