It’s that time of year when Austinites get to do what they do best: passionately champion their favorite tacos, hangouts, and hidden gems. The Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin Awards are back, giving the community a chance to vote for the spots, people, and local favorites that help make Austin, well, Austin.

James Renovitch, managing editor of the Austin Chronicle, joined We Are Austin’s Trevor Scott to talk about how the annual awards work and how people can take part.

Reovitch shared why the BOA issue matters to Austinites and local businesses. “Best of Austin has been around for close to 40 years. It’s something that winners take very seriously. They put the sticker up in their windows, and they get social media materials that say ” Best of Austin Winner.”

Voting begins with a nomination round, which serves as the first phase of the process. From there, the community helps shape what rises to the top across a wide range of categories.

This year’s ballot includes opportunities to vote for favorite spots, people, and hidden gems around the city. The awards also leave room for voters to add comments, with the chance for those remarks to be featured in the winner’s issue.

“This is an opportunity for people to kind of help decide the categories in round one. Basically, this is the write-in category. So you decide who you want to pick. Anyone. The sky’s the limit. Whoever you think is your favorite in any category, you just write it in. If you can write in why you’re voting for any particular person, when we print the issue in June, you might include your little quote and why you like it, a little love letter from somebody.”

Beyond bragging rights, the Best of Austin Awards are also a community-driven way to support local businesses and creatives by recognizing the places and people that keep Austin’s culture buzzing.

To vote, people can head to the Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin voting site and cast their picks during the nomination round to help their favorites get recognized.
