A night of punk music and borderland storytelling is taking over the San Antonio Public Library this weekend.
In what organizers describe as a blend of scholarship and live music, author Tara Martin López will headline an event at 4 p.m. Saturday at the San Antonio Public Library central branch, centered around her book “Chuco Punk: Sonic Insurgency in El Paso.”
The work draws from more than 70 interviews and archival research to explore the Chicanx punk scene in South Texas and how border and immigration policies helped shape its sound.
Registration for the author talk is already full, but the evening will continue with a free, open-to-the-public punk show starting at 6 p.m.
San Antonio band Sacred Games will lead the local lineup, joined by W.I.M.P. and Fatal Fatigue. Headlining the event are Del Rio-based group The Code 88s, known for channeling the high-energy, anti-oppression themes highlighted in Martin López’s research.
Performances will take place on the top floor of the library’s parking garage, with no registration required to attend the concert.
