Major closures planned along Katy Freeway in Houston

  • March 27, 2026

Drivers in Houston should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this weekend as two major closures take effect along the Katy Freeway as part of ongoing construction and maintenance work.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the closures are tied to routine repairs and a major infrastructure project designed to reduce flood risk along White Oak Bayou.

All eastbound mainlanes of I-10 will be shut down from the West Loop (610) and U.S. 290 direct connector to Washington Avenue/Westcott Street.

Start: 9 p.m. Friday

End: 5 a.m. Monday

Reason: Routine pavement repairs

Drivers should expect a lengthy detour, with TxDOT recommending traveling south on the West Loop and then taking U.S. 59 north to reconnect.

Westbound frontage road and exit closure

A second closure will impact the westbound I-10 frontage road between Studemont Street and Heights Boulevard.

Start: 10 p.m. Friday

End: 5 a.m. Monday

Additional Impact: The westbound exit ramp to Heights Boulevard will also be closed until further notice

This closure is part of the White Oak Bayou Elevation Project, a major effort to reduce flooding risks in the area.

White Oak Bayou Elevation Project

The project carries a price tag of about $400 million and aims to raise sections of I-10 above the floodplain between Heights Boulevard and I-45.

Key improvements include:

Elevating mainlanes to reduce flood risk

Reconstructing HOV lanes

Rebuilding the Houston Avenue bridge

TxDOT says the project is on schedule and expected to be completed in 2028.

What drivers should know

Officials urge drivers to:

Follow posted detours

Check updates on Houston TranStar

Allow extra travel time

Be patient during ongoing construction

“Pack your patience,” TxDOT spokesperson Kris Hadley said, noting crews are making steady progress.

If you’re heading out this weekend, plan ahead, these closures are expected to cause significant delays, especially during peak travel times.
