EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — As International Women’s Month nears its end, a senior center in West El Paso held a celebration on Friday to honor the women who call it home.

The Polly Harris Senior Center and the El Paso Parks and Recreation Department hosted a special event giving women at the center “their time to shine.”

The annual celebration included music, dancing, raffles, and other activities, as each participant received a rose as a symbol of appreciation.

During the event, attendees could be heard cheering, “Que viva las mujeres!”

Center supervisors said the program is meant to uplift women and give them a sense of community.

“We’re celebrating their life, their resilience, their perseverance here on earth, and so we’re wanting for them to have a great day,” Maria Lopez, program supervisor at Polly Harris Senior Center, said.

She added that she celebrates that day in honor of her mother, “My mother grew up in times when women really didn’t have too many rights, but she taught me to be independent and be both a mother and a professional.”\

The celebration honors International Women’s Month, which celebrates the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in communities across the world.

“We are proud to celebrate the incredible women in our community who continue to inspire us with their strength, resilience, and lasting contributions,” Parks and Recreation Director Pablo Caballero said. “This event is a meaningful way to recognize and honor their impact while bringing our community together in celebration.”
