“I think it’s amazing that they are. I think it will bring people to the city. Lots of basketball fans.”
HOUSTON — The Houston Comets could be coming back. While the deal still awaits final approval, the potential return of Houston’s beloved WNBA franchise has fans across the city buzzing with anticipation. If everything goes through, the team would return as the Houston Comets in 2027.
Downtown Houston residents are already feeling the excitement. Chris Williams said he’s thrilled about the news, given the team’s storied legacy.
“Actually excited that they’re coming back, seeing that they actually won four titles in a row and just disappeared.”
The Houston Comets were the WNBA’s first dynasty, and for many fans, this announcement feels like a long-overdue homecoming. Williams added that the team’s rich history makes the return all the more meaningful.
“Good to just bring them back since they like it and have a great history here.”
But for some, this is about more than just basketball. Crisha Lewis said the return could have a broader impact on the city and inspire the next generation.
“I think it’s amazing that they are. I think it will bring people to the city. Lots of basketball fans. Good for girls. Go girls.”
Courtney Upshaw echoed that sentiment, saying the move sends a powerful message.
“It’s a great look for the city. And is inspirational, especially for our younger women.”
The timing of the comeback also resonates with fans who have watched women’s sports grow in popularity across the country. Bob Morrow said he believes Houston is ready for it.
“I think that’s great. WNBA is the market right now.”
He added a simple message for anyone on the fence about attending games.
“Go see these girls play because it’s a great game.”
Residents say the return of the Comets is about more than sports. It’s about civic pride and putting Houston back on the WNBA map. Trece Thompson said the team would simply “add to the ambiance of Houston,” while Upshaw put it another way.
“It just makes Houston becoming more of a round circle of everything.”
The deal still needs final approval before it becomes official.
