ABILENE – The Greenwood girls soccer team is heading to the Region I-4A Division II final.
The Rangerettes defeated Brownwood, 2-0, in a regional semifinal game at Wylie High School on Friday to reach the first regional final in the program’s five-year history.
Greenwood (18-2-6) advances to play Godley, a 1-0 winner over Graham, at a time, day and place to be determined.
Greenwood got a breakaway goal from Emily Jones on an assist from Brooke Rogers in the first half, and then Jones netted her second goal of the match in the second half, and 40th of the season, off an assist from Ella Cook.
Once again, the Rangerettes’ defense was stellar as they recorded their 15th shutout of the season by holding the Lions scoreless. They have also outscored their opponents, 13-2, in the postseason.
SWEETWATER – The postseason run for the Midland High girls soccer team ended on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Denton Guyer in a Class 6A Division II regional semifinal match at the Mustang Bowl.
This is farthest the Lady Bulldogs (12-10-2) had gone in the playoffs since 2015.
Guyer improved to 20-3-1 and will face either Southlake Carroll or Prosper in the regional final.
Guyer had not allowed a goal for six straight matches until MHS had a goal from Adeline Hahn 11 seconds into the match.
Guyer then answered with four straight goals to answer the first half to take a 4-1 lead.
Guyer led 5-1 before MHS answered with a late goal from Nevaeh Ortega.
