This opening comes after the highly controversial decision to remove the city’s rainbow crosswalks, which previously were located at North Main and West Evergreen.

The removal of the sidewalks came after an initiative from Gov. Greg Abbott, intended to remove “political messaging” or distracting non-standard visual markers from public Texas roadways.

The sidewalks were not without their own controversies, as councilmembers clashed over the $170,000 from the Public Works budget for the installation of rainbow-colored sidewalks.

Many LGBTQ+ advocates locally also said that the city’s decision to comply with the governor’s orders went against due process, and a step back in the fight for recognition and protection for those in the LGBTQIA+ community.
