UTA gives students the option to purchase a health insurance plan through the UT System during the school year. This plan offers customizable coverage to allow students to select options that best suit their individual needs, whether it’s for themselves, a spouse or their children.
The UT System partners with Academic Health Plans to negotiate the rates for students. Currently the insurance plan is Academic Blue, provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield for all students, both international and domestic.
For students required to have health insurance, which includes many international students and those in the health profession programs, the UT System works to have affordable insurance that meets these requirements, said Yvonne Medrano, UTA Health Services associate director.
The insurance plan can be purchased either annually or every semester. There are different plans for students with spouses or children. Fall coverage starts at $1,306, and begins Aug. 15 and ends Dec. 31. Spring and summer coverage starts at $2,132, and begins Jan. 1 and ends Aug. 14.
Students can pay in installments, and those with financial aid or scholarships can also apply those resources toward the plan.
The plan covers certain preventative care, wellness exams, immunizations, unexpected illness and mental health resources. It reduces out-of-pocket expenses for unexpected injuries, emergencies and chronic conditions.
Students pay a medical services fee of around $50 per semester, which covers medical consultations and basic nursing care. However, costs for lab work, prescriptions, and X-rays are typically out-of-pocket unless a student is enrolled in a health insurance plan.
The plan also carries a $500 deductible and is widely accepted at hospitals and specialists outside the university.
“Benefits of having it is resting assured that you are covered in the event that something were to come up; that you would be able to kind of help cover the cost of it greatly and then have a safety net to fall back on should something like that occur,” Medrano said.
