DENVER — The Denver Broncos sure know how to throw a welcome home party.
Cowboys running back Javonte Williams scored two touchdowns in his return to the place that drafted him, but overall it was a tough day for the Cowboys’ running game in a 44-24 loss in Denver on Sunday. The Broncos’ defensive line — lauded by many around the Cowboys headquarters in the leadup to Sunday’s game — was as advertised. Williams finished with 13 carries for 41 yards. Both of his touchdown runs came at the one-yard line.
It ultimately was a bittersweet return for Williams.
“I feel like we could’ve played better overall,” he said. “I wish we would’ve won. It turned out the way it did. We’ve got to execute better and get ready for next week.”

The lore of the return also faded quickly for Williams.
“It was just another game for me,” Williams said.
Williams had two touchdowns, but he also received another thing from Sunday’s game. He traded jerseys with Broncos defensive lineman Malcolm Roach, a former teammate.
A win would’ve been the best gift for Williams in his return to Denver. Instead, the Cowboys are also taking some lessons learned about where they need to improve. Williams said the offense just needed to execute better to be the high-scoring version they have been most of the season.
