CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The two-time reigning Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana University softball team completed its fourth consecutive Southland Conference sweep with a pair of shutout victories Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field.
Southeastern (30-9, 12-0 SLC) extended its school-record winning streak to 16 games with the wins over the Islanders (10-25, 4-8 SLC) and SLU ran its season total to 14 shutouts.
In the opener, Bre Clark, Haley Crawford (3-1) and Katherine Thiessen held the Islanders to one hit in a 6-0 shutout victory. Shenita Tucker led SLU with two hits, while Maria Detillier drove in two runs for Southeastern.
Cera Blanchard (11-1) allowed two hits and struck out nine in a 4-0 victory in the nightcap. Ka’Lyn Watson hit her fourth home run of the season, as she and Shelby Morris each had two hits.
Southeastern will continue its eight-game road swing with a three-game series at four-time reigning SLC regular season champion McNeese. The series opens with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday and concludes Friday at 1 p.m.
Game One – Southeastern 6, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Tucker laced a triple into the right centerfield gap and scored on an RBI by Morris.
SLU broke open the game in the top of the fourth inning. Colleen Kulivan doubled home the first run, then she and Tucker came in to score on a throwing error by AMCC starter Josie Whitehead (3-10). Detillier closed out the scoring with a two-run single later in the frame to give Southeastern a 6-0 cushion.
From there, Southeastern pitching held the Islanders at bay, as Crawford and Thiessen combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief on the way to closing out the victory and securing the series for the Lions.
Game Two – Southeastern 4, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 0
Blanchard and AMCC starter Kendra Winfrey (7-9) matched zeroes until Southeastern broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Brilee Ford singled home Watson to give SLU a 1-0 cushion.
Watson added to the Lion advantage with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. Morris singled home Tucker in the Southeastern seventh to close out the scoring.
Blanchard didn’t allow a hit in the first four innings and continued her scoreless start to Southland Conference play. The Metairie, Louisiana native is 3-0 with an 0.00 ERA versus league competition this spring.
