Referring to San Antonio Spurs’ superstar Victor Wembanyama as The Alien has been widely accepted across the NBA after only three seasons. What better way to describe a basketball player who does things on the court that are simply not of this universe?
On Saturday (March 28), NBA on Prime took Wemby’s otherworldly nickname to another level by building an entire narrative about the French phenom’s upbringing on another planet.
In Wemby: Out of This World, a short, news-style mockumentary that aired before the Spurs vs. Milwaukee Bucks game, an “inter-cosmic specialty reporter” for Prime Sports took viewers to a galaxy far, far away to share Wemby’s origin story.
The news story began “lightyears from Earth” at Orbital Heights Middle School where Wemby first discovered his love for basketball. There, Space God, one of Wemby’s former teammates, talked about what it was like playing ball with him at such a young age.
“We played early, like our third growth cycle,” Space God said. “Bro was already dunking … He was unguardable back then.” Wemby’s fictional coach at Orbital Heights, Coach Brakkus, also spoke about Wemby’s unmatched skill on both sides of the court. “It wasn’t just his size,” Brakkus said. “We had never seen anyone who could handle the ball like that, space the floor, and be a menace on defense.”
Myrielle Solari, one of Wemby’s middle school alien teachers, also talked about his intelligence and how she knew he would have a bright future. “He was such a joy to have in class; brilliant mind,” she said. “If he wasn’t a basketball player, he could’ve been whatever he wanted to be.”
Wemby: Out of This World also included never-before-seen photos of Wemby and his team and classmates and a frontpage article in The Quantum Tribune showing him cutting the nets after Orbital Heights’ back-to-back championships.
All the young aliens on Wemby’s home planet use his success as inspiration to reach for the stars. “You never know where the next superstar gonna come from,” Space God said. “All it takes is for one to be the first.”
