Their vision was to create an affordable steakhouse that honored its Texas roots. They succeeded beyond their wildest ideas, as from these humble beginnings, they built a restaurant that would become a true legend in San Antonio.
For decades, Little Red Barn has served everyone – everyone – from politicians and businessmen to everyday San Antonians and tourists. Everyone is welcome at the Little Red Barn. I myself have been coming here since I could eat solid food, and have seen it triple in size and become one of the largest independent steakhouses in the country.
Generations have flocked to the welcoming arms of this restaurant to celebrate birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and milestones of all kinds are celebrated here. Patrons are greeted inside by their waitstaff bedecked in their iconic uniforms of cowboy hats and boots.
You still sit at the picnic tables and can read the menu off the walls, which are adorned with the names and cattle brands of ranches from all across South Texas. I found myself once more within the warm embrace of the Little Red Barn, drawn by my all-time favorite meal, their chicken-fried steak.
The steakhouse serves all kinds of offerings, from old-school T-bones and porterhouses to massive ribeyes and New York strips. They also offer fried fish, shrimp, grilled and fried chicken, and pork chops. However, I am a chicken-fried steak (CFS) fiend, and in all the years that I’ve been going to the Little Red Barn, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve had something different.
I like what I like – and what I like is how they do their CFS at the Little Red Barn.
Breaded in a cracker-like crust, the healthy-sized tender cut of meat is deep-fried in a fryer and served smothered in one of three different gravies, all liberally sprinkled with a dash of paprika; I’m not sure why it’s there aside from aesthetics, but I love it.
Let’s talk gravy; they’ve got your traditional white country gravy, your hearty brown, and my personal favorite – yellow chicken gravy. There’s just something about the way that particular gravy’s savoriness pares beautifully with the steak.
I digress. Your meal comes with a side salad (I encourage you to try their green goddess dressing) and a choice of sides. My favorite is their steak fries, but you can also get baked potatoes, green beans, or sweet potato fries. It also comes with some dinner rolls.
As a meal, it is sublime. Every bite reminds me of the first time I ate there. Memories flood back, and I am quite frankly happy.
I will admit that the draw for me to the Little Red Barn is greatly influenced by nostalgia. I will also admit that their chicken-fried steak isn’t the best, but it is my favorite. If you haven’t made a visit, for your own sake, get there as soon as you can and enjoy.
