AUSTIN, Texas — The government shutdown enters its 27th day with no deal in sight. Now, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says federal food aid will not go out on November 1. The notice comes after the Trump Administration said it would not tap into roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – or SNAP – following November.
States could attempt to free up money from their own budgets to bridge the funding gap, but the USDA says states will not be reimbursed from temporarily picking up the costs. Several states, including Texas, have already issued notices that SNAP benefits will not be paid until the shutdown ends and funds are released.
