We’re one month into the Iran War, so don’t blame people for thinking Red Dawn is starting if they see military helicopters flying en mass over their city. That was the situation this weekend when residents in Austin took to social media to alarm folks about a group of helicopters that seemed to be flying over the city out of nowhere.
Redditor sudomegaman shared an image of the helicopters flying over his home on Sunday, March 29, with the caption “Ton of helicopters flying over North Austin?” Another user, cedivad, followed up with a post of his own, spotting the military vehicles over South Austin and identifying the helicopters as two Apaches and three Chinooks.Â
The original post had over 100 replies, with some spotting the helicopters in Pflugerville and many sharing how they shook their homes.
“Yeah shook my house holy hell,” Treyzilla40 wrote.
“My 2 year old stopped what she was doing and just stared at me like what’s happening,” SamaLuna replied.
“All the dogs in the neighborhood started freaking out,” sudomegaman wrote. “It sounded like a plan flying low it was so loud.”
“I was in the shower, thought the washer was about to blow up or something,” damurd replied.
While man_gomer_lot added, “Both me and my cat thought we were about to have one crash into our house.”
Apparently the source of all the confusion was none other than Circuit of the Americas. The famed race track east of Austin was hosting the final day of the MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas on Sunday, but before the races could start off, COTA held a military flyover courtesy of Fort Hood in Killeen. Those same helicopters causing scares in Austin made their way to the race track and flew over the cheering fans before making their way back home.
FlightAware tracked the five helicopters in flight, showing them leave at 2:05 p.m., head southwest before cutting southeast to fly through downtown Austin, circle South Austin a couple times before making their way to COTA in Del Valle, soar over East Austin before cutting west and then north on the return trip.
So, yes, the U.S. military caused a bit of a stir this weekend in the Texas capital, but the invasion has not started yet.
MySA has reached out to COTA and Fort Hood for comment on the helicopters.
