EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A man died after a three-vehicle crash that snarled traffic on I-10 West and Gateway West earlier this month.

The El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations unit was called to the crash at 8:41 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at I-10 West at Mile Marker 26 near Hawkins.

Preliminary information indicates a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu exited a nearby parking lot, failed to stop, crossed all lanes of Gateway West and jumped the center median into the westbound lanes of I-10.

Once on the interstate, the Malibu collided with two other westbound vehicles before coming to rest in the roadway.

Police said the Malibu’s driver, 74-year-old Sergio Miguel Gomez of Central El Paso, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

A passenger in the Malibu was also taken to the hospital with injuries.

The other vehicles involved were a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek driven and a 2018 Subaru.

Police said Gomez later died from his injuries on March 26.

The death is the 11th traffic fatality in El Paso this year, compared with 16 at this time in 2025.
