Cody Campbell is a believer some things are off limits when it comes to football in the state of Texas.
Campbell, Texas Tech’s billionaire megadonor, took to social media on Monday to express his objection to discussions to move the Texas Tech-Houston football game to a Friday night this season.
“Friday Night Lights are sacred in the Great State of Texas!” Campbell posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. ” It is absolutely absurd that the Big 12 and Fox would consider scheduling Texas Tech and Houston on a Friday night!! I know that (commissioner) Brett Yormark is not a native Texan, but he’s been here long enough to know better! Come on, man!”
The Big 12 was not immediately available for comment.
UH played three times on Friday last season: at home against Colorado and on the road against Central Florida in Big 12 play and at Oregon State in non-conference play.
In recent years, the Texas High School Coaches Association has expressed displeasure with Division I football conferences scheduling Friday night games during the high school regular season.
“We are asking all conference commissioners to refrain from scheduling Friday night games during the 11-week Texas high school football regular season. We feel Friday nights should be about the communities involved with Texas high school football,” THECA executive director Joe Martin said in 2024.
