Despite outhitting Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, the Gregory-Portland Ladycats were unable to overcome a big fourth inning Monday, falling 7-2 in a District 29-5A matchup on the road.
Gregory-Portland (11-16-2, 6-6) collected 10 hits in the contest but committed four errors that contributed to five unearned runs in the decisive fourth inning for Veterans Memorial.
The Ladycats struck first in the opening inning and added another run in the fourth, but the Lady Eagles (20-9, 11-1) responded with single runs in the first and third before breaking the game open with five runs in the fourth to take control.
Emily Cameron led Gregory-Portland at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 with a double and scoring a run. Emily LaFavers also had a strong offensive performance, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Alyssa Padron added two hits, while Deandra Molina drove in a run. Kailani Vargas, Leanna Molina and Cadence Sandoval each contributed one hit as Gregory-Portland totaled 10 hits in the loss.
LaFavers pitched six innings for Gregory-Portland, allowing five hits and seven runs – none earned – while striking out five and walking three.
Gregory-Portland left eight runners on base in the contest.
The Ladycats will return to 29-5A play on Friday when they host Corpus Christi Miller at 7 p.m.
