Following a recent cold front, the National Weather Service says there is now a slight chance for hail-producing rain showers and thunderstorms to hit the eastern portion of the Texas panhandle on Tuesday, March 31, producing a number of potential hazards and risks for local residents.Â
Those risks include the possibility of 60 mile-per-hour winds, very low tornado chances and hail hitting the area on Tuesday afternoon, according to the NWS-Amarillo office.Â
However, the weather agency said on Monday morning that there are still significant uncertainties surrounding the forecast, including the timing of an incoming cold front, which could either reduce or increase the area’s severe thunderstorm threat.Â
Impacted areas include smaller Texas cities surrounding Amarillo, like Clarendon, Wheeler, Wellington, Canadian and Follet, as well as parts of the Oklahoma Panhandle.Â
The office says that severe storm chances are “very low” — just between 10-30% odds for development — a few storms in the area may become severe.Â
The Amarillo office said via X this week that the region is experiencing strong winds, fire hazards and “record heat and dry conditions,” this week.Â
On Tuesday night, a new system and cold-front could push across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, bringing added moisture into the atmosphere and 10-15% chance of over a quarter inch of rain. Precipitation chances will be the highest between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Â
