SAN ANTONIO – The trial of three former San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers accused in the 2023 shooting death of Melissa Perez resumes today with significant testimony shedding light on the events leading to her death.

Key Testimony

Last week, forensic pathologist Dr. David Lynch provided detailed insights into the trajectory of the bullets that struck Perez. He noted that one bullet entered near her armpit, suggesting that her arm was raised at the time of the shooting. This detail is crucial, as it may indicate that Perez was not in an aggressive posture when the officers opened fire.

In contrast, the defense maintains that Perez was holding a hammer and advancing toward the officers, which they claim justified their use of deadly force.

Investigation and Credibility Concerns

Further complicating the case, SAPD crime scene investigator Yvonne Diaz testified that she was not instructed to measure key areas of the scene when documenting it. This omission raises questions about the thoroughness and accuracy of the crime scene investigation.

Additionally, Detective Deanna Platt testified about her role in the investigation. The defense challenged her credibility, citing a temporary suspension a decade ago for her investigation of a crash. While the judge allowed a question about Platt’s suspension, he blocked the introduction of the crash report, focusing the jury’s attention on her current testimony.

Ongoing Proceedings

The trial is expected to continue into next week, with the prosecution aiming to establish that the officers used excessive force during a mental health call at Perez’s apartment. The defense is working to demonstrate that their actions were justified based on the perceived threat posed by Perez.
