A woman received a life sentence without parole for a wrong-way DUI crash that killed a Fort Worth police sergeant in 2024.

De Aujalae Evans pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter hours into the first day of her trial last week in the death of Sgt. Billy Randolph. She was sentenced on Friday.

The crash occurred in August 2024. Randolph stood outside his vehicle investigating a tractor-trailer wreck on Interstate 35 South near Sycamore School Road when Evans struck him while driving the wrong way.

Evans continued driving after the collision and attempted to flee. She jumped from her vehicle at one point, but officers took her into custody.

Evans admitted to drinking at least 10 shots over four hours before driving. She failed a field sobriety test. Police also learned Evans was on probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Randolph served 29 years with the Fort Worth Police Department. His former chief, Neil Noakes, said the loss would alter the department.

“There is no excuse for drinking and driving,” Noakes said after Evans’ arrest, per CBS. “It is too easy to make plans beforehand or just use a ride service. Ms. Evans made a decision. Her decision was to get behind the wheel drunk.”
