LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Minutes after a spirited exchange with Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire- following the Red Raiders 42-17 win over the Jayhawks, Kansas coach Lance Leipold continued to address the issue during the post-game press conference.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s supposed to be for safety and things like that. It’s a culture that’s been accepted to a point and it hasn’t changed. And eventually somebody’s going to be seriously hurt, unfortunately,” he said, while also stating that one member of his staff was hit by a pocketknife.
Back in August, the Big 12 athletic directors voted 15-1 against fans throwing objects onto the field- Tech AD Kirby Hocutt was the one that voted in favor. As part of the ruling, fans are given two warnings, before 15-yard penalties take effect. On Saturday, Tech was penalized twice in the homecoming win- one time in the second quarter, and once more in the third.
Coach McGuire even said true Red Raider fans would abide by the rule- especially if it affects Tech’s field position in games.
“We’ve got a new rule in this league and we know the rule, and we didn’t follow it, and we got penalized tonight, two 15-yard penalties, and he was frustrated on that side,” he said. “We got to be better. We got to do a better job. We got to find a way to do a better job as a whole, all of us, and we will. We’ve got two weeks to have a better plan and get the point across of what the rule is. Because it’s going to catch up with us.”
When Tech hosted Colorado last November, Coach McGuire addressed the crowd and told fans to stop throwing objects onto the field.
