Body found burning with hands bound in San Antonio identified

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The Bexar County Medical Examiner is identifying a body found burning and bound on the Southeast Side over the weekend.

It was reported the condition of the body might make identification difficult, but we now know the person found dead was Manuel Gomez Mendez Jr., 84. While a name has been attached to the case, the cause of death and other details remain unclear.

Witnesses called in the fire around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, but it was not known that a body was on fire until the San Antonio Fire Department arrived on the scene. From there, homicide detectives began asking questions to witnesses in the area of Rigsby Avenue and Roland Road.

Detectives say Mendez was not only severely burned, but his hands were bound and his body was wrapped up in a shower curtain, along with other materials.

There is no word on any potential suspects in the case.
