These days, Houston chef Chris Shepherd is well-known for his work outside the kitchen with the TV series “Eat Like a Local” that spotlights eateries around Houston and the brains behind them. As part of his mission to acknowledge so many of his kitchen compatriots, he also hosts the Breaking Bread series of live conversations and his next one is with rapper and restaurateur Bun B.

Much like Black Violin, Atlanta-based Orchestra Noir blends the world of classical and contemporary African American music into a vibrant, energetic whole. The group is coming to Houston on the Culture 2000 tour which is a celebration of early 2000s culture. Hits from that era will be re-interpreted in a very Orchestra Noir way.

Houston Symphony’s ‘Fantasia’

There are perhaps few things more glorious than watching scenes from the 1940 Disney classic “Fantasia” on a big screen with a live orchestra playing the score full of classical masterpieces from Bach, Stravinksy, Beethoven and other celebrated composers. Houstonians will have three chances to do this as the Houston Symphony will be accompanying clips both from the original film as well as “Fantasia 2000,” making for a perfect outing for the family.

The big hit Broadway production “SIX The Musical,” which played in Houston in 2022, returns for a six-day run as part of the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center series. This re-imagining through song of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII won the Tony Award for best original score and the Outer Critics Circle Award for best musical.

David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin’s “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” won the best documentary feature Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards and now Houstonians have a chance to see what the fuss is about. The documentary follows Russian teacher Pavel Talankin as he struggles with the increasing militarization of his student body during his country’s war with Ukraine. Ultimately, he proves he’s not a nobody after all.

If you like pop-flavored dance music in the vein of Rufus du Sol and Sultan + Shepard, then the live pairing of LA band Cannons, fronted by the charismatic Michelle Joy, with New York-based duo Bob Moses for the “Afterglow” tour is a definite treat. The ultra-melodic Cannons have a bunch of hits such as “Fire For You” and “Bad Dream” while the moodier, more electronic Bob Moses is known for such tracks as “Inner Light” and “Afterglow.”
