LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Severe Thunderstorm Watch for part of the eastern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area expired as scheduled, 11 PM CDT. The severe storms have moved east and out of the viewing area.
The storms developed along the intersection of a dryline moving east and a cold front moving south. These features contributed to showers and thunderstorms, some severe, over the Rolling Plains and far southeastern Panhandle.
Wind and Rain
Wednesday is shaping up to be windy. Sustained westerly winds near 25 mph are likely, with stronger gusts likely.

Tomorrow a NO BURN DAY. The combination of dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds, creates elevated to near-critical fire weather conditions, particularly across the western South Plains.
A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from noon to 9 PM CDT Wednesday. This likely will be upgraded to a Fire Weather Warning (aka Red Flag Warning) before noon tomorrow.

Visibility may be reduced at times due to blowing dust. If you’re driving, especially on open roads, be extra cautious. Dust storms can develop quickly and make it difficult to see the road ahead. Slow down and turn on your headlights.

Late Wednesday spotty rain showers are possible. A few thunderstorms may develop as well, though they’ll likely be east of the Caprock. Any rain will be light and scattered. Any storm, however, may produce strong wind gusts and possibly hail.

Thursday looks much better. High pressure will move in, bringing more sunshine and less wind. Temperatures will peak in the 80s.

It should be a good day to get outside and enjoy the weather. Remember that the fire danger will remain elevated due to the dry fuels, so be careful with any outdoor activities involving heat or flames or that might generate a spark.
Another Rain Chance
Another weather system will bring another chance of rain Friday evening. Showers and thunderstorms are possible, though the better chance will be mainly off the Caprock.

Dry but Cool
After the rain chance ends early Saturday, Easter Weekend will be dry, but noticeably cooler. A cold front moving through Friday night will usher in more seasonable temperatures for the weekend.

On This Date
On this date in 1980, a cold front swept through West Texas around 6 PM. Strong winds behind the front continued until late that night. Winds in excess of 50 mph over much of the region caused widespread minor damage. The blowing dust and sand was quite the inconvenience. Gusts to 60 mph in Lubbock caused near zero visibility.
