The Central Market in Uptown is a step closer to reality.

The anticipated grocery development in the neighborhood received approval from the City Plan Commission recently. The proposal, which dates back to about July 2025, calls for the redevelopment of the site.

The Central Market would be at the busy corner of Lemmon Avenue East and McKinney Avenue and would cover roughly 60,000 square feet. The proposal includes a parking structure, landscaping and other features at the site.

The proposal’s next key step will be a vote by the City Council.

Central Market, part of H-E-B, has been a subject of anticipation for years in the Uptown area that includes modern high-rises, stores and restaurants. Construction on the store has been on hold since 2023 when development plans for a high-rise, mixed-use project were complicated by a softer post-COVID commercial market.

The company last year aimed to start construction in 2026, pending city zoning and permitting approvals.

Central Market, known for higher-end items, offers customers about a half-dozen sites today in North Texas. They include stores in Plano, Fort Worth, Southlake and a handful in Dallas.
