EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 14-year-old student was taken into custody after school administrators reported the student had a weapon at IDEA Horizon Vista in El Paso, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the incident happened on Tuesday at about 1:57 p.m., when an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputy working an off-duty assignment at the school was flagged down by administrators about a student reported to be in possession of a weapon.

The deputy took the juvenile and the weapon into custody without incident, the sheriff’s office said.

The student was then transported to the Juvenile Probation Department.

This incident highlights the importance of quick action and coordination,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “We also want to remind the community about the serious consequences of bringing prohibited items to school.

The sheriff’s office said all students remained safe and there was no danger to the campus.

IDEA provided the following statement:

Law enforcement was contacted, and the campus was placed on hold while they conducted an investigation. The individual involved was taken into custody and arrested by law enforcement. All students and staff are safe. As this is an ongoing investigation, all further questions should be directed to the El Paso Sheriff’s Department.
