City opens public comment period on street renaming

HOUSTON – The City of Houston is moving to rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard, as the city opens a 30-day public comment period starting today, April 1, to May 1.
The item is scheduled for a City Council vote May 13 with a 30-day effective date if approved.
The push to remove Chávez’s name follows recent allegations that the late labor leader groomed and sexually abused young girls, revealed publicly last month.
Locally, the Houston Independent School District has already dropped “César Chávez Day,” redesignating March 30 as Farmworkers Day, and said any decision about renaming Chavez High School would follow its formal process.
If the City Council approves the street change, Houston Public Works will install new signs from May 13 to June 12, and the city will notify property owners and agencies.
38 parcels currently use the Cesar Chavez Boulevard address.
