Calallen is a perfect 8-0 against Zapata since April of 2021 and they’ll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Wildcats will head out to face off against the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. Calallen will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak.
Zapata’s hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Thursday: Calallen hadn’t allowed a single run the last three times they’ve hit the field. Everything went the Wildcats’ way against King on Tuesday as they made off with a 22-0 victory. Considering the Wildcats have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday’s blowout was nothing new.
Drayton Mitchell made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn’t given up a single earned run in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI.
In other pitching news, John Cooper Becton looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn’t given up more than one earned run any time he’s pitched this season.
Back at the plate, Jimmy Tipton III and Wyatt Duke did most of the damage at the plate: Tipton III went 2-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and one double, while Duke went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one triple. Those six RBI gave Tipton III a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Reese Rusher, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Calallen always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. That’s the best OBP they’ve posted all season.
Meanwhile, Zapata fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Robstown on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cottonpickers by a score of 5-4. The Hawks haven’t had much luck with the Cottonpickers recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they’ve met.
Jay Solis was cooking despite his team’s loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two doubles, and two RBI.
Calallen’s record now sits at 21-2. As for Zapata, they now have a losing record of 8-9-1.
Zapata’s pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Calallen hasn’t had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .416. It’s a different story for Zapata, though, as they’ve only averaged .241. Will they be able to contain Calallen’s hitters?
Calallen got the ‘W’ in their previous meeting back in April of 2025 against Zapata by a conclusive 13-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the team won’t have the home-field advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
