DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks are honoring a franchise legend.

The team on Monday announced it will retire Mark Aguirre’s No. 24 jersey in a ceremony on Jan. 29, 2026. It is the fifth number the team has retired throughout its history, since joining the NBA in 1980.

Aguirre was the club’s first-ever No. 1 overall pick — and the only one before Cooper Flagg was drafted this year — in 1981.

A DePaul product, the 6-foot-6 small forward was an immediate scoring threat for the 1980s-era Mavericks, averaging 24.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in eight seasons in Dallas.

The Mavericks traded Aguirre to the Detroit Pistons during the 1989 season — his eighth with the team.

“As we look back on 45 years of this franchise, it is a great honor to recognize one of our legends,” said Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont. “Mark’s legacy as a foundational player is defined by excellence, determination and commitment. We are proud to pay tribute to his profound impact on this organization by retiring his jersey and immortalizing his legacy as one of the Mavericks’ greats.”

Aguirre is among the Mavericks’ career leaders in points (13,390), points per game (24.6), 30-point games (160), field goals made (5,441), free throws made (2,815) and offensive rebounds (1,259).

The team announced that fans who attend Aguirre’s Jan. 29 jersey retirement ceremony will receive various pieces of Aguirre memorabilia, including an exclusive Hardwood Classic bobblehead.

Which numbers have the Dallas Mavericks retired?

Aguirre’s No. 24 jersey will now join three of his 1980s teammates, and the undisputed greatest player in Mavericks history in the rafters:

No. 12: Derek Harper No. 15: Brad DavisNo. 22: Rolando BlackmonNo. 24: Mark AguirreNo. 41: Dirk Nowitzki

Could the team’s second-ever No. 1 pick join those five one day? What about another beloved star Maverick player who was famously traded away from the team in his prime?
