When the Canyon ISD tennis team’s bus broke down in Fort Worth on the way to the state tournament in Waco, North Side High School tennis coach Jose Lopez didn’t hesitate.

With quick thinking, and approval to use an Fort Worth ISD school bus, he jumped behind the wheel and drove the stranded players more than 90 miles so they could compete in the University Interscholastic League state team tennis tournament on time and safely.

District leaders say Lopez embodies the district’s spirit of teamwork, hospitality and doing what’s right for kids, even when they aren’t his own students.
