The PGA Tour is making one final stop in San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open ahead of next week’s Masters.
Looking to take advantage of the last chance to punch a ticket to Augusta National, SMU product Austin Smotherman made a splash in Thursday’s first round, bouncing home his first ace on Tour on the 220-yard, par-3 No. 13. Smotherman is among the logjam of contenders, including Plano’s Will Zalatoris, at the top of the early leaderboard.
Neither Smotherman nor Zalatoris are currently qualified to play in next week’s major tournament, but a win in San Antonio would secure their place in the field.
