SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are getting more than $1 million in new funding to help solve murders and long-unsolved cold cases by using forensic genealogy to analyze DNA and genetic evidence tied to homicides and sexual assaults.

Congressman Joaquin Castro secured the money for the city and the San Antonio Police Department to use the technology, including on cold cases. Castro said the funding is intended to help investigations and bring victims and their families answers.

“Today we declare that we are determined to solve every single one of these unsolved cases, and that we are committed that if you murder somone in san antonio whether it was last year or 40 years ago, we are determined to find you,” Castro said.

Castro also challenged the state to provide additional funding to the San Antonio police to further expand the use of the technology.
