AUSTIN, Texas — Police have identified the 55-year-old man who was arrested Saturday after allegedly shooting two people in two separate incidents in Austin, including one at the city’s main public library.
Harold Newton Keene faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of deadly conduct in connection with the shootings, according to the Austin Police Department.
The first incident occurred around 1:37 a.m. Saturday when officers responded to a shooting on a Capital Metro bus in the 3200 block of Guadalupe Street. According to an arrest affidavit, a bus passenger confronted Keene after he allegedly pointed a pistol at a woman and juvenile on the bus. The affidavit states Keene pulled a pistol, aimed it at the passenger and fired a single shot, grazing the victim’s left hip before fleeing the scene on a scooter.
Around 12:06 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Austin Central Library at 710 W. Cesar Chavez Street. Police found a victim with a gunshot wound in a sixth-floor bathroom. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing the library bathroom after the shooting and boarding a westbound Capital Metro bus on Cesar Chavez Street, according to the affidavit.
Officers located Keene at approximately 1:22 p.m. at a Starbucks at 4006 S. Lamar Blvd. A stolen handgun was recovered from a bag in Keene’s possession, the affidavit said.
Keene told detectives he shot a passenger on a bus after an altercation, according to the affidavit.
Both shooting victims are expected to survive, police said.
Keene was booked into Travis County Jail Saturday evening. Jail records show he faces a total of 10 charges, including a first-degree felony for drug manufacturing and delivery, tampering with evidence, and two applications to revoke probation. His total bond was set at $315,000.
