Harold Keene is also accused of a shooting on a CapMetro bus earlier on Saturday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have identified a man accused in a weekend shooting at the Austin Central Library and linked him to a separate shooting hours earlier on a city bus.

Court documents state that 55-year-old Harold Newton Keene allegedly shot a person inside a sixth-floor bathroom at the library on Saturday, Oct. 25, before escaping on a CapMetro bus.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), officers had responded around 1:30 a.m. the same day to another shooting on a CapMetro bus in the 3200 block of Guadalupe Street. A passenger told police Keene had been making strange comments, took what appeared to be drugs and threatened riders with a gun. The passenger said after he told the driver to stop and got off the bus, Keene fired at him, grazing his hip. Keene reportedly fled on a scooter down Guadalupe Street.

Later that afternoon, officers responded to the Central Library, where surveillance video showed a suspect matching Keene’s description leaving shortly after the victim ran out following the shooting. Investigators said Keene again boarded a CapMetro bus after leaving the scene.

According to the documents, CapMetro reviewed footage and spotted the suspect getting off the bus at the Brodie Oaks shopping center on South Lamar, near State Highway 71 in South Austin. APD said patrol officers found Keene outside of a Starbucks with a bag carrying a stolen pistol and drugs.

He was arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail.

Travis County Jail records show Keene faces 10 charges in connection with the two incidents, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, tampering with evidence and a probation revocation application. Court records reveal Keene is required to stay away from Austin Central Library and all CapMetro buses as part of his bond conditions order.

Police said both victims are expected to recover.
