A 16-year-old boy is dead after he was allegedly shot by another teenager Sunday evening in what Fort Worth police said appeared to be an accident, according to a statement from the department.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting about 5:17 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 6600 block of South Hulen Street.

Police found a teenager with a gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that the two were together and inside a residence when one of the boys accidentally fired a gun, striking the other in the chest, the statement said.

According to the police statement, officers took the suspected shooter into custody, although they did not say what charges they planned to file in connection with the incident. Neither of the teens were publicly identified.

Police have not publicly said if they know where the boys obtained the weapon.

Police said homicide detectives will continue the investigation into what led to the shooting.

“The Fort Worth Police Department recognizes the profound effect this tragic incident has on the victim’s family and the community,” the statement said. “Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Fort Worth Police Department.”

No further information about the shooting was immediately available.
