Pizza is one of the most delightful and well known foods in the world. Across Houston, there are many successful local spots that continue to be discovered by new visitors every day. One I recently visited is a long running establishment with a strong history in the community and recognition from various outlets, known as Star Pizza.
What makes Star Pizza stand out is how the team prepares the pizza and the overall dining experience. Each pizza is made to order using fresh ingredients, with sauce and dough made from scratch. It takes about 30 minutes to cook, which allows the staff to focus on creating the best possible pizza.

The Vibes
The interior of the location I visited, Star Pizza #1, was impressive in its old fashioned style. Wood covered the seating, tables, and walls, creating a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. The furniture feels like a step back in time, reminiscent of the early 2000s before many chains modernized their designs. There is something genuinely charming about enjoying pizza in a place that has stayed true to its original look. Star Pizza #1 has never felt the need to change, and that is exactly why it works.
The space is also very art friendly. When you walk in, you will notice edited vinyl album covers displayed on the left side, including a creative version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller with a slice of pizza added to the artwork. These details help shape the identity of the restaurant and reflect the era it comes from while keeping the atmosphere classy.
The walls are filled with handwritten messages and drawings from customers. One server pointed out a piece in front of me to another group, mentioning it was created by a known artist, although he did not know the name. It was a simple sketch of someone eating pizza, drawn in marker. Many visitors leave their mark with short messages, relationship notes, first visit dates, brand tags, or even funny drawings like an Among Us character.

The Food
Now, onto the food. Pizzas are available in thin crust, New York style, or Chicago style, with four different sizes to choose from. There are 14 specialty pizzas, or you can build your own with more than 35 toppings. If you prefer something more affordable, you can also order pizza by the slice.
In addition to pizza, there are many other menu options including salads, bread, pasta, and sandwiches. From what I observed, the breadsticks and garlic bread are large portions meant to be shared. You could easily save some for later and still have enough for another meal.
During my visit, I chose the buffet so I could try a variety of options. There were more than 12 pizzas available, and I sampled over eight of them. Here are my top five, along with the Chef’s Special as a bonus.
I started with a classic, pepperoni pizza. It had everything I expected, including flavorful pepperoni, melted mozzarella, and a rich tomato sauce. It was the perfect way to begin, and I quickly noticed something consistent across all the pizzas. The cheese stayed warm and stretchy, which made every bite satisfying. There is nothing better than pizza that remains gooey and full of flavor from start to finish.
Next, I tried the Hawaiian pizza, which had a noticeable sweetness from the ham. The flavor reminded me of the kind of ham served during holiday meals, with a slightly sweet and rich taste. Opinions on pineapple on pizza may vary, but in this case, the balance worked well.
I also sampled a unique pizza topped with penne pasta, bacon, and cheddar cheese. It was rich and cheesy, with no tomato sauce. The combination focused on creating a hearty and savory flavor. The bacon added depth, and without it, the pizza would have felt incomplete. The mix of smoked meat, melted cheese, and firm pasta made each bite satisfying.
The chicken and spinach pizza offered a lighter option compared to the others. The chicken was well seasoned, and the spinach provided a strong flavor. Additional toppings like mushrooms and steak added extra depth. It was a refreshing change from the usual pepperoni choices.
As the buffet was nearing its end, I tried a few final options. The deluxe pizza had a balanced mix of toppings, and the cinnamon dessert pizza delivered a sweet flavor with frosting and what appeared to be chocolate drizzle. Even after sitting for a while, it still tasted enjoyable.
No visit would be complete without trying the Chef’s Special, a Chicago style deep dish pizza topped with regular pepperoni, cup and char pepperoni, sausage, ricotta cheese, and marinara sauce. This pizza was a standout. As someone who had not experienced Chicago style pizza before, I was impressed by the thick, soft dough and rich flavors. At first, I did not realize the topping was ricotta, but once I tried it properly, I appreciated how it complemented the rest of the ingredients.
By the end of the buffet, I was completely full, but I still decided to take a dessert to go. There were several options, including Italian cream cake, carrot cake, strawberry cream cake, cookies and cream cake, and Neapolitan cheesecake. I chose the strawberry cream cake to try later. It was creamy with a subtle strawberry sweetness.

Final Thoughts
Overall, I really enjoyed my visit, but the highlight was the staff. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and no one seemed disengaged. The team appeared to enjoy working together, which created a positive atmosphere. At one point, I overheard a staff member having a genuine conversation with a customer about menu options that turned into a friendly discussion about career interests. Moments like that make a place feel special.
Although I did not get the chance to interview the general manager, it is clear that Star Pizza is a place built on community, inclusivity, and care. It is a great spot to relax with friends and family, enjoy pizza and drinks, and watch sports. When I visited, March Madness games were on, and the atmosphere made it easy to imagine this being a popular place for game nights.
