SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Health care for veterans in San Antonio appears to be getting a boost.

The proposed city budget for 2027 includes $30 million to buy land for a new veterans medical center in the Alamo City.

KSAT-12 reports the proposal comes a month after Mayor Gina Jones and Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs requesting support for the new Veterans Affairs center.

Jones has offered several factors that drive her push for a new facility that would replace the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital. These include 64% of those enrolled in veteran health care in the region being under 64 years old. That number is reportedly higher than the national average.

Also under consideration for the new facility is the number of female veterans getting healthcare in South Texas, which is on the rise.

There is no specific timeline for the land purchase or the beginning of construction of the new facility.
