With many food spots in Downtown Houston serving pizza, sandwiches, seafood, or barbecue, one place stands out by breaking away from the usual lineup. Space City Birria offers authentic Mexican fast food and has even been voted for having some of the best birria tacos in the city.

I first discovered the restaurant during a popular food event at the University of Houston, and it quickly became a must visit on my list and a place I wanted to review for Texas Tasty. Mexican food holds a strong cultural connection in Texas, especially within the Hispanic community. Many authentic spots are often found as taco trucks near gas stations or small markets, so having a permanent location downtown is meaningful for representation and accessibility.

Culture, Inspiration, and Atmosphere

Space City Birria was founded at a time when Houston had plenty of Tex Mex options but fewer truly authentic Mexican restaurants. Inspired by his mother’s cooking and cultural roots, founder Humberto set out to bring bold, traditional flavors to the city while pushing creativity in the kitchen. Today, the restaurant has become a staple in the community, hosting events like Lotería nights and sports watch parties, and even building connections with the Houston Astros.

The interior reflects both Houston pride and Mexican culture. The space features orange lighting, space themed decor, and playful details like planets and astronaut graphics. Murals highlight elements of Hispanic culture, lottery imagery, and inspiring figures such as Ellen Ochoa alongside Houston Astros players. The result is a space that feels energetic, welcoming, and rooted in identity.

The Food Experience

During my visit, I wanted to try as much as possible. I started with a special menu item, tostadas topped with tinga, beans, lettuce, queso fresco, sour cream, and avocado. After the first bite, it became my favorite. The chipotle flavored chicken was rich and flavorful, and the queso fresco and sour cream added the perfect balance. The portion was generous, so I took my time to enjoy every bite.

Next, I tried the charro beans. They had a mild heat that added flavor without being overwhelming. The mix of beans, sausage, jalapeños, bacon, and onions made it one of the most satisfying sides. It felt lighter than rice but still packed with flavor, making it easy to keep going back for more.

Since I visited on a Tuesday, I also ordered street tacos from the Taco Tuesday special. I chose fajita steak and pastor, and both were juicy and fresh. Each order came with toppings like onions, cilantro, lime, and salsas. I used salsa verde to keep the flavors balanced. The tacos were slightly larger than typical street tacos, which made them even more enjoyable.

After a short break, I ordered a quesabirria and a side of rice. I did not try it with the dipping broth, but the quesabirria still stood out. The edges had a slight crisp, and the birria was juicy and flavorful, which is key to a good dish. The rice was simple, but adding salsa verde gave it an extra boost.

Although I reached my limit, I noticed several other items worth trying. The nachos were generously portioned, the birria ramen offered a creative twist, and the quesadillas looked well filled. Elotes were also available, making for an easy and flavorful snack on the go.

The restaurant also offers drinks from the bar. While I did not order one, I saw others enjoying margaritas that looked refreshing and well made.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

Overall, this was one of the best Mexican meals I have had in Houston and easily ranks among my top three places to eat. The food felt authentic, fresh, and carefully prepared. Every dish reflected traditional flavors, making it a strong alternative to Tex Mex. I even considered returning the next day for more tostadas, which says a lot about the experience.

Authentic Mexican food is something everyone should try for its bold flavors and lasting impression. In a city like Houston, there are many opportunities to explore it, from downtown restaurants to food trucks across different neighborhoods.

Space City Birria is a welcoming place for anyone looking to enjoy quality food and a strong sense of culture. If you visit, start with the tostadas while they are available, try the charro beans as a side, and go for tacos with fajita steak, cilantro, onions, and salsa verde. To complete the experience, a classic margarita is a great choice.
