EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – An arson suspect was arrested by El Paso County deputies over the weekend after several fires were started in the Hanover area.
Deputies said they arrested 33-year-old Dana Rempel after they determined several fires were connected to him.
Deputies said that on Sunday, at around 9 a.m., they received multiple reports of several fires that started in the Hanover area, as well as an adult male running into an adjacent field.
Deputies said Hanover Fire personnel responded and requested law enforcement to help due to reports of an active arsonist.
Deputies said with the assistance of Fountain police and deputies from Pueblo County, they established a perimeter and deployed drones.
Drones from El Paso County deputies and Fountain police identified about seven separate fires, along with one vehicle fire, within a one-mile area extending southwest along the creek bed near High Stakes View
A fire investigator from the Fountain Fire Department responded and determined the fires originated near the 21200 block of High Stakes View and extended to a vehicle fire behind a residence on High Stakes View, deputies said.
Deputies said the fires were determined to have been intentionally set.
Deputies said at about 11 a.m., they located an unresponsive adult male matching the suspect description near Indian Village Heights and Boca Raton Heights.
Law enforcement personnel responded and rendered aid, deputies said. The suspect regained consciousness, and deputies identified him as Rempel.
Deputies said evidence was found during the investigation that linked Rempel to the fires.
Deputies said all fires were extinguished with no structural damages or loss of life. No injuries to first responders were reported.
Deputies said Rempel was booked into the El Paso County Jail on charges of fourth-degree arson and additional felony charges. Jail records said Tuesday morning that Rempel was being held on a $50,000 bond.
