Born and bred here, I am a Fort Worth gal at heart. When I lived in Virginia, Oklahoma and Alaska, Texas always called me home. I have now been back to my Fort Worth roots for almost 22 years.

My great-grandparents lived here, my grandparents, and my parents. It is a generational love for this city.

Fort Worth is a lot less a cowtown than when I grew up here. There is such a rich culture, with many museums, an award-winning zoo, performing arts, and great food and drink spots. Still, it maintains the hometown country vibe.

My husband works in Midland, and I work remotely for a company in Virginia. We could not leave our special city. So for now, we are living life “Landman”-style, traveling between Midland and Fort Worth. The trip is worth it.

La Cantera is the neighborhood we have called home for eight years. It is a beautiful and friendly community. Houses vary in size and style, which gives the place a uniqueness and great vibe. Kids move around the area, reminding me of how neighborhoods used to be when I grew up.

We have community events at the pond — everything from food trucks to markets. Families fish together at the pond or just go to have a picnic and enjoy time together. People still help others by baking meals or joining in a football toss. They wave and smile, always with a jovial, “Hello.”

At Christmas time, the neighborhood has so much charm and yuletide feel. Every year, we drive around to look at the lights. What a joy it is to have a community joining in the magic of Christmas.

One part of the neighborhood has a street beautifully overgrown with trees. Deer are a frequent sight. When the fawning season arrives, they are an absolute treat to see. People set out food and watch them graze. The community here respects the deer, driving slowly with the windows down so kids can see them. This section and the pond are definitely my favorite features of La Cantera.

Enough waxing poetic. My family and I love La Cantera and Fort Worth.
