The Humane Society is facing a pet food shortage, leaving families struggling to feed their pets
When pantry shelves run low, it’s not just people who feel the impact; pets do too. In North Texas, one local Eagle Scout took action to make sure local animals don’t go without.
On March 27, members of Scouting America Troop 261 from Plano gathered at the Humane Society of Dallas County with a mission to build a community pet food pantry that would provide a steady resource for pet owners facing hard times.
The effort was led by Life Scout Samhith C., who is working toward achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. As part of the process, Scouts must complete a service project that benefits their community. For Samhith, that meant supporting both people and their pets by creating a resource families could rely on.
“This was a unique opportunity to not only work toward my Eagle rank and give back to the community in a meaningful and impactful way,” Samhith said.
Critical Timing For Animals
The need for the pantry is urgent. The Humane Society of Dallas County is currently facing a shortage of pet food due to increased demand. Families looking to keep their pets at home are finding resources stretched thin.
“This food pantry represents more than just supplies, it represents stability for families and a second chance for pets,” said Sarah McGoldrick, VP of Animal Operations. “We believe pets belong at home with the people who love them, and this pantry helps make that possible.”
A Resource That Keeps Giving
The pantry is open every day and will continue to serve families in need, helping prevent unnecessary pet surrenders and keeping animals out of overcrowded shelters. The Humane Society is calling on the community to contribute, with donations of pet food needed to keep the pantry stocked and ready for families.
