This offseason, the Longhorns rostered just three scholarship quarterbacks. Two of them — KJ Lacey Jr. and Trey Owens — had never played a down against SEC opposition. The other, Arch Manning, was about to take over as a full-time starter for the first time. Sarkisian needed to inject some experience into his quarterback room.

“We looked at a few guys,” Sarkisian said. “Everybody was looking everywhere. I mean, everybody’s trying to figure out: Who’s your backup? It’s hard, in this day and age, to keep multiple really high-level, five-star-type quarterbacks. So you got to look around.”

Sarkisian’s search led him to Matthew Caldwell. On the surface, the addition appeared unconventional. A senior, there was little prospect of him ever starting for the Longhorns, given the expectations for Manning. And Caldwell had bounced around from Jacksonville State to Gardner Webb to Troy without ever nailing down a full-time job as a starter.

But Sarkisian said he connected with Caldwell on his visit, appreciating his unassuming demeanor and sensing no trepidation over playing for a school with Texas’ history and expectation.

“It just felt like it was the right fit,” Sarkisian said.

Matthew Caldwell: Why Texas football transfer QB has worked out

Caldwell has aced the test off the field, according to his teammates. Multiple Texas players explained that the backup quarterback is consistently the most energetic player on the sideline during games.

His offseason work generated faith in his teammates, too, helping Caldwell overcome a background that doesn’t shimmer with the same luster boasted by many highly recruited Longhorns.

“We all had a lot of confidence in him, seeing what he can do,” Texas wide receiver Parker Livingstone said. “What he did in the summer, what he did in fall camp.”

When called upon to play, Caldwell has been nearly perfect. He won last week’s game for the Longhorns by changing the play call at the line of scrimmage, then tossing a perfect fade route to Emmett Mosley V for an overtime touchdown against Mississippi State. For the season, he’s 5-for-8 for 85 yards and a touchdown.

He’s not the only backup success story in the SEC. At Ole Miss, Trinidad Chambliss had similar roots. The Rebels brought him in from Division II Ferris State to back up Austin Simmons. After an injury to Simmons early on, Chambliss took hold of the full-time job and hasn’t yet relinquished it. He’s one of the 10 favorites on FanDuel to win this season’s Heisman Trophy.

Though that kind of impact seems unlikely for Caldwell, it’s possible he’ll be asked to take on a more significant role this week.

Manning is in concussion protocol and did not practice Monday, according to Sarkisian, putting his status for Saturday’s game against No. 9 Vanderbilt into question.

Could Caldwell get the nod for his first Texas start? If so, do his teammates trust him to get it done?

His showing in a wild 45-38 win Saturday certainly helped.

“He did his job,” Texas defensive tackle Hero Kanu said. “…I’m super happy. I was on the sideline, and I was almost like a tear coming down my eye. Damn. This is insane. That was an insane game.”
