If you haven’t heard, Houston Black Restaurant Week is now underway. The annual event, true to its name, runs through April 19 and shines a spotlight on the various African-American, African and Caribbean spots around the city. But there are dozens of restaurants, and presumably, only one of you. What to tackle first?

We scoured the BRW list for restaurant specials, looking at businesses that were offering the best value. That meant something special, something affordable, and also something you could take home for later. Here’s what we found:

Jamburritos in Pearland (11710 Broadway St.) is doing a $20 catfish Louis in honor of Louis Armstrong. It features blackened catfish, bayou cream shrimp, red beans and rice, creole cabbage, and collard greens served either on top of a jambalaya rice or inside a tortilla.

She Goat in Cypress (18056 FM 529) has a handful of specials that look particularly inviting. You can get a four-piece wings and fries plate for $10, or a big mess of nachos served with smoked boudin, pepperjack sausage, melted cheese, salsa, jalapañeos and sour cream for $20.

Caribbean Jerk Palace in Third Ward (3801 Emancipation Ave.) is also running several specials for BRW. You can get a jerk chicken dinner, served with rice and peas and one more side, for $20. Frozen sidecars and wine by the glass are available for $10 and $5, respectively.

A few restaurants are offering prix-fixe menus. Davis Street at Hermann Park (5925 Almeda Rd.) is running a $35-per-person brunch that comes with a buttermilk biscuit, a first course and second course, and a $55-per-person dinner with a grilled rosemary flatbread, a first course, second course and dessert course. Elsewhere, Lolo’s Chicken & Waffles HTX in East Downtown (3611 Gulf Fwy) has a $40 three-course menu featuring deviled eggs, a soul food platter and peach cobbler egg rolls.

Guzel Cakes, near the Marq-E Entertainment Center (7613 Katy Fwy), probably has the best to-go special. For $12, you can get a sample gift box with five bite-sized tastings of their signature products. That includes their puddings, pudding cakes and cheesecakes.

BRW, which specifically highlights Black-owned restaurants, launched in Houston 11 years ago and has since gone nationwide with similar events in cities including Atlanta, New York and Washington D.C.
