LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech University’s Presidential Lecture & Performance Series will host Lubbock Lights, an event commemorating the life and legacy of Christopher “Stubb” Stubblefield, founder of Stubb’s Legendary Bar-B-Q and a remarkable figure in Lubbock’s cultural and musical history. A panel of speakers will share anecdotes of Stubblefield.
It’s at 7 p.m. tonight at the Allen Theatre, Student Union Building at 2625 15th St.
The gathering will reflect on Stubblefield’s impact not only as a famous restaurateur, but as a community builder. Stubblefield first opened his barbecue restaurant in 1968 at 108 East Broadway, where he forged a reputation for both exceptional food and extraordinary generosity.
As the times evolved, the restaurant transformed into more than a dining destination. During the 1970s it became a cultural hub where the Lubbock community and its music intersected. Known for his Sunday Night Jam sessions, Stubb hosted performances which lasted well into the morning hours and sparked the professional careers of several future West Texas Walk of Fame inductees.
Stubblefield’s legacy lives on, and it is recognized through numerous honors throughout the city. The most notable is his induction into the West Texas Walk of Fame in 1996, as well as the American Royal Associations’ Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2019. Today, the original site of Stubb’s is marked by a bronze sculpture designed by Terry Allen.
The event will include a panel of storytellers featuring:
· Terry Allen, internationally recognized multidisciplinary artist
· Lloyd Maines, Grammy Award-winning producer and musician
· Paul Milosevich, West Texas Hall of Fame inductee known for his narrative-driven artwork
The program will be led by West Texas Walk of Fame inductee Andy Wilkinson. Together, panelists will reflect upon the life of Stubblefield, his influence on generations of artists and the importance of community connection.
Tickets are $23 for general admission. Texas Tech students may attend for free with a valid student ID and can claim tickets in advance at the Student Union Building information desk. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the PLPS website.
