There’s a good chance if you ask anyone from San Antonio to name the most iconic food from Fiesta, you’d get the same answer. That’s right, there can be only one. And it’s chicken on a stick.

With Fiesta season fast approaching, you can count on scores of area restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups to fire up the fryers and stock up on skewers. And we salute those valiant efforts to keep the city’s bottomless craving for breaded cutlets and jalapeños satisfied.

The unsung heroes, however, are those with the focus, commitment and sheer will to keep the chicken-on-a-stick flame burning around the calendar. Their numbers may be small, but they stand for something greater.

Whether it’s your birthday, anniversary or because you just plain want one, here are five San Antonio restaurants that will never let you down when the appetite comes calling.

This brand may be from Buffalo, but it knows how San Antonio rolls. Which is, of course, on a stick. Naturally, a bar known for its hot wings has to spice things up a bit. Show up for the killer burgers, highly regarded spicy chicken sandwiches and because they have the guts to put a Fluffer Nutter on the regular menu. Stick around for the chicken on a stick ($8.99). Chef and owner Benjamin De Los Santos launched Benjie’s as a food truck in 2014, and expanded his hit-on-wheels into a brick-and-mortar location in 2017. 1218 W. This is the show-off version of chicken on a stick, served hot from a converted rail car in Olmos Park. This version, dubbed Fiesta Sticks, features herb-brined breaded bites of chicken on a skewer with a peppy Bulldog Sauce and Kewpie mayonnaise. This venerable bastion has been keeping San Antonio’s belly full of puffy tacos, fideo loco and other beloved Tex-Mex staples since 1978. And they keep the chicken on a stick ($6.99) classic here.
