DALLAS — Dallas City Council has removed Cesar Chavez Day from the city calendar, voting to replace it with a day honoring Dolores Huerta instead.

The council voted on Wednesday to designate Huerta’s birthday, April 10, as Dolores Huerta Day. Huerta is known for her work as a labor rights leader, having co-founded the United Farm Workers with César Chávez.

Huerta released a statement in March accusing Chávez of sexual abuse, following an investigation by the New York Times. Chávez has faced national scrutiny after he was accused of sexual abuse and grooming of young women and girls in the farmworker movement.

In a March statement, Gov. Greg Abbot said that the state of Texas would no longer observe the Cesar Chavez Day holiday, announcing he intends to work with lawmakers to remove Chávez from state law entirely.
