LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Reliant partnered with the Early Learning Centers of Lubbock for its “Read and Chill” program today.
The program kicked off with story time and a donation of more than 500 books for the Early Learning Center to use in its classrooms. Each student also got to take one home today to encourage families to have storytime themselves.
“It expands their vocabulary, it just triggers all sorts of brain activity, then there’s that social-emotional development from snuggling up with your child in your lap and just having that quiet time of reading a book with them, it just helps children grow and develop in so many different levels,” Lena Scaff of the Early Learning Centers of Lubbock said.
Reading can also help fight the “summer slide” and learning loss. That’s when students, mostly younger and economically disadvantaged, can lose up to two months of comprehension when they’re out of school.
