If you grew up in San Antonio in the late 1980s or later, chances are that sometime during your childhood, you took a field trip downtown to visit the Alamo and watch Alamo: The Price of Freedom at the IMAX Theater. Call it a San Antonio rite of passage.

On Tuesday (April 7), the office of Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick released a news brief stating that Patrick invited Sheridan to direct a new film on the Alamo and that Sheridan accepted the request. The film will be screened at the Alamo Visitor Center and Museum, inside its immersive 4D theater.

“Once I saw the plan for the theater, I knew there was only one screenwriter, film producer, and director in the world to make this film for the Alamo Museum – Taylor Sheridan,” Patrick said in a statement. “Over the last decade, Taylor has told the story of the American West – the people, the land, the depth, and the history – in a way no other filmmaker has. In addition to his amazing film portfolio, Taylor is a native Texan who knows and loves our state and its history.”

Sheridan was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and raised in Fort Worth. His mother was originally from Waco. The family purchased a ranch in Cranfills Gap, a small town in central Texas. Sheridan graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth and went on to study theater at Texas State.

“The Alamo is the very bedrock Texas was founded upon,” Sheridan said in a statement. “To chronicle the sacrifice made by the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives defending the Alamo is an honor I eagerly accept.”

Along with creating the popular Western TV series Yellowstone, some of Sheridan’s other credits include TV series Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Landman, and The Madison, which premiered on Paramount+ in March. Sheridan was also nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Original Screenplay category for the 2016 contemporary Western crime drama Hell or High Water.

In 2024, Sheridan’s epic Western 1923 starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, filmed throughout Texas with parts of downtown San Antonio also being used for a backdrop.
