LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) -With a 99-yard kickoff return to start off a 42-0 win against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech running back/kick returner J’Koby Williams became one of this week’s “Big 12 Special Teams Players of the Week”.
During the game-opening kickoff, many eyes were on the fans to see if tortillas would- or would not be thrown. Just seconds into the game, and after the tortilla-less kickoff, the stadium’s attention turned to No. 20 as he went coast-to-coast for the first touchdown of the day- a play that set the tone for Tech throughout the game.
“We were planning on getting a good kick return. We practiced it all week and I just seen the hole and I hit it,” Williams said Saturday night after the win.
No. 20 had originally been slated to be one of Tech’s main kickoff returners but became more involved in the running back room after running back Quinten Joyner was injured. For J’Koby, returning to special teams felt like home.
“I like kick return,” he said. “I like that the coaches trusted me to get back there and return the ball, so I’m going to just keep going at it, keep working on it and just getting better every day.”
On the following drive, Williams turned a Will Hammond screen pass into a 26-yard score, his second of the day- and with 13:07 left in the first quarter.
The prolific running back is sharing this week’s honors with TCU kicker Nate McCashland.
J’Koby and Red Raiders return to the field 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kansas State. The game will air on FOX34.
